Mastering YouTube Assets & Dimensions

YouTube remains the world's second-largest search engine, and visual CTR (Click-Through Rate) is the single most decisive factor determining browse feature recommendations. Your thumbnail must not only meet the technical standard of 1280×720 pixels (16:9 ratio) under 2MB, but must also respect UI collision zones. Crucially, the video timestamp badge sits at the bottom-right corner across all mobile, desktop, and TV layouts. Any focal text or visual hook placed in this danger zone becomes illegible to prospective viewers.

Frequently Asked Questions

YouTube officially specifies a minimum width of 640 pixels, with an optimal dimension of 1280×720 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio. The file size must remain strictly under 2.0 Megabytes (MB), formatted as JPG, GIF, or PNG.
YouTube only generates the `maxresdefault.jpg` (1280×720) file if the original uploaded video was rendered in high definition (720p or higher) and the creator manually uploaded a custom thumbnail. For standard-definition videos, our tool gracefully falls back to `hqdefault.jpg` (480×360).
The bottom-right corner (~160×50px on desktop, scaling dynamically on mobile) is permanently overlaid by the black video duration badge. Keep all critical text, facial expressions, and focal graphics in the center and left two-thirds of your 16:9 canvas.
